Cloud Migration
Cloud migration is the process of moving an organisation's IT resources, including applications, data, and infrastructure, from on-premises data centres to cloud-based environments. The migration process can include evaluating the organisation's current IT landscape, selecting the right cloud service provider and platform, and re-architecting applications to take advantage of cloud-native capabilities.
Using an EA tool like Colloquial, organisations can assess their existing IT infrastructure and applications to identify opportunities for cloud migration. Colloquial can provide insights on the value, cost, and risk of each application, as well as guidance on how to migrate the application to the cloud.
How to get started
First start with crafting your Application Portfolio. You can use a table like Microsoft Excel or a tool like Colloquial. Check out our Quick Start Guide.
Now you have an Application Portfolio, an essential part of the application lifecycle is evaluating and overhauling the portfolio of applications in your organisation.
You’ll need a view of your applications’ Business and Technical Fitness to identify those high-value opportunities.

Once the applications to be migrated have been identified, the organisation can select the right cloud service provider and platform. Colloquial can provide guidance on evaluating cloud service providers based on factors such as scalability, reliability, and cost.
-
Bundle your applications based on their dependencies. You have two primary options around the your applications migrations. The first is lift and shift, these effects move current runtimes into the cloud. The technology fitness of the application will receive limited benefits, but you will be off the 5-year server refresh cycle. The second is re-architecting to be cloud native. In this scenario, more investment is required but you’ll achieve the opportunities of cloud-native architecture such as availability, flexibility and cost.
You should tag your assets such as “migration group A” and set your KPIs. You can use Colloquial to track your migration groups and the state of your applications and where they are hosted.
-
Once the applications have been selected for migration and the cloud platform has been chosen, you can create a migration roadmap.
The next step is to implement the migration effort. This should include identifying your key stakeholders, defining detailed testing cases, and assembling your team.
